Clutch / Disc
A clutch disc is a key component of a manual transmission, connecting the engine to the gearbox. It allows the driver to engage or disengage power flow between the rotating crankshaft and the transmission input shaft. By providing a controlled friction surface, it translates engine torque into motion while enabling smooth gear changes. In high‑speed or high‑torque situations, the clutch disc must handle significant shear forces and heat generated by the engine’s combustion cycle.
The clutch disc sits between the flywheel and the pressure plate, forming the friction interface that couples or decouples the drivetrain. It is typically made from layered composite materials that resist wear and heat. When the clutch pedal is depressed, the pressure plate releases the disc, allowing the engine to spin freely. Failure of the disc—due to wear, overheating, or material fatigue—can cause slippage, loss of power transfer, and potential damage to the transmission. Regular inspection and timely replacement are essential for maintaining drivetrain reliability.
