Oil cooler (various)
An oil cooler is a heat‑exchange device installed in a vehicle’s lubrication system to lower engine oil temperature. By circulating oil through a finned tube or plate assembly exposed to engine coolant or ambient air, it removes excess heat generated during combustion and bearing friction. Maintaining lower oil temperatures improves viscosity, reduces wear, and stabilizes pressure in the oil pump, thereby supporting consistent lubrication under high‑load or high‑speed driving conditions.
The cooler is typically mounted near the engine block, often behind the intake manifold or in the engine bay where airflow is optimal. Oil flows from the engine to the cooler, through the heat‑exchange surface, and returns to the oil pan. Failure or blockage can cause oil temperatures to rise, leading to viscosity loss and accelerated component wear. Regular inspection for leaks, corrosion, and ensuring adequate coolant flow are essential maintenance tasks that preserve cooling efficiency and engine longevity.
