Viscous Clutch

The viscous clutch is a mechanical coupling that connects the engine to the transmission, allowing controlled torque transfer while permitting a limited amount of slip. It is commonly used in automatic and semi‑automatic transmissions, as well as in some industrial machinery. By combining a set of plates with a silicone‑based fluid, the clutch moderates the impact of sudden torque spikes, protecting drivetrain components and improving ride smoothness. In real‑world driving, it helps maintain steady acceleration under varying load conditions.

The clutch plates are arranged in a stack that sits between the input shaft and the output shaft of the transmission. When the engine turns, the plates are pressed together by a viscous fluid that resists sudden motion. This resistance creates a progressive torque limit, preventing abrupt jerks and allowing the vehicle to shift smoothly. Over time, the silicone fluid can degrade, and plate wear can increase, leading to slipping or loss of power. Regular inspection and replacement of the clutch pack are essential to keep the drivetrain operating efficiently.
